Legendary Napoli staff member Tommaso Starace reveals Scott McTominay was initially sceptical about his coffee in the morning: ‘Now he averages two.’
Starace is not just a simple warehouse worker. The 70-year-old spent 40 years at Napoli, witnessing all the club’s Serie A titles.
“There are no differences; there can’t be one better than the other. Each of these victories has exciting stories,” Starace told Gazzetta.
“The parade from last month is unforgettable for me, the team, Conte, and De Laurentiis because Napoli is appreciated for his beauty and charm.”
‘McTominay was sceptical about Napoli coffee’
Starace has now retired, but the coffee he made and offered to Napoli players and the club’s guests became an iconic symbol.
“Of course, there was something for everyone. Maurizio Sarri would take four or five; they helped him smoke,” he said.
“He and Zeman were neck and neck on that front. Spalletti was cautious so as not to be tempted by cigarettes again. McTominay was sceptical at first; now he averages two in the morning with me.”
Starace on Maradona and Mertens
Starace became a close friend of many Napoli legends, including the late Diego Armando Maradona and Dries Mertens, the club’s best scorer.
“Maradona is the greatest of all time; he had extraordinary humanity,” Starace said.
“He taught us how to become Italian champions and win trophies. I was lucky to be the way I am: I cared about everyone, and that affection was returned.
“Mertens became like a family member, a son. There was immediate empathy, and time has cemented our rapport.”
